As the oldest town in Lesotho (having been founded in 1833 by pioneer French Protestant missionaries), Morija boasts many historical buildings. These include the oldest house in Lesotho (originally built in 1843 and now containing a craft centre), and a church, constructed from bricks fired from sheep dung. During the second half of the 19th century Morija, as the educational centre of Lesotho, gained a number of important institutions, including Lesotho's first teacher training college. A printing works was established in the vestry of the church in 1861 and subsequently expanded, eventually becoming a printing works for Protestant educational and religious materials, serving much of southern and central Africa. Books in more than 50 languages have been printed here. Although of ancient origin, the Morija Printing Works today occupies a new building with equipment that makes it the leading printing press in Lesotho. It still undertakes considerable work on books for export to other African countries. Scott Hospital was opened at Morija in 1938, and expanded to include a nursing school. Morija is also home to the Morija Museum and Archives since 1989. Mophato oa Morija, originally constructed as a youth centre, has today developed as a conference centre, with additional facilities for this purpose. The town also boasts one of the largest post offices in Lesotho. Matsieng. the country residence of the King of Lesotho, is situated just west of Morija, to which it is linked by a tarred road.Location: Lesotho » Morija
